Jennie and a Book was born out of a love of imagination and of storytelling. Here you’ll find thoughtful reviews of books, storylines, characters and the reading experience. While this site tends to favor mysteries and thrillers, you’ll also find it peppered with other genres, including literary fiction, romance, historical fiction, horror, cozies and more. The goal is to get people reading and, maybe, try a new genre or two and expand those horizons.
Reading is extremely good for mental wellness yet many adults don’t take time to pick up a book. Coming soon to this site, you’ll find a list of organizations that actively promote reading and literacy. With that said, this site is newly established, so keep checking back to see even more changes!
If you would like Jennie and a Book to review your book, please contact us via the form on the Contact Us page or email us at jennie@jennieandabook.com.
We want you to love reading! We do that by providing honest feedback on books to help you find a story you’ll love.
We also want finding a good book to be easy. Our goal is to offer great recommendations because we know there are a lot of books out there, and some are better than others.
While we want to help you find books you’ll love, we also want to help you explore new genres, especially if your journey to becoming a reader is just beginning. Let’s make it the best it can be.
On this site, you’ll find book reviews, booklists, recipes, tips to create the best reading experience and more.
Our book reviews typically start with a quick overview of what the story is about, followed by insights into the book, what seemed to work, what seemed unfinished, the characters and overall thoughts. We will never give harsh criticism because not only is that unkind, but also because we know it’s really hard to write a book.
We will note a warning if there is an excessive amount of foul language, extreme situations (suicide, graphic sex, abortion, rape), or anything else that we may feel the reader will want to know ahead of time. Emphasis on the words extreme and excessive. If it’s in there, but not overwhelmingly, we’re not going to note it.
Pace can be interpreted as follows:
· Fast – These books are easy to read. In fact, you could probably finish them in a weekend or while on holiday. Frieda McFadden’s books tend to have a fast pace.
· Comfortable – While the writing in these books is easy to follow, you’ll probably want to take your time to savor the experience. Laura Dave’s The Night We Lost Him and Nnedi Okorafor’s Death of the Authorhave an easy pace.
· Average – These books, as the rating states, have an average pace. They don’t flow off the page as effortlessly as Fast and Comfortable, but they also aren’t full of stumbling blocks or ragged cadences that can hold you up.
· Slow – Books with a slow pace are written in a cadence that’s relatively bumpy, have odd sentence structures, or incorporate stumbling blocks such as long words, complicated subjects or an overabundance of descriptors and stimuli.

You will most likely not find books with this rating, but...in the event you do, it means stay away, or quite possibly that it took six months to finish. Six months we’ll never get back.
